Apart from a few smaller states—South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, in particular—the Asia-Pacific region is “one of the most repressive regions in the world—and the situation continues to deteriorate,” says RSF. Not entirely surprised by that, but I am surprised that India is faring so poorly. It is the biggest democracy after all. South Africa and Namibia are bright spots.
