Hopefully the rest of the world will realize how dangerous these companies are and take action.

Why wouldn’t they? After reading Careless People I’m not surprised anymore when Meta sinks to lows like this. Why? They’ve done it before. The punishments did not outweigh the advantages. Don’t forget Myanmar, or the United States, or countless other countries where meddling has occurred in relation to public change or elections. I deleted all Meta products from my phone and am waiting on my account export before removing Meta from my life completely, after nearly 20 years. They could’ve become something very different. I celebrated Zuckerberg ringing the opening bell thinking, “finally, a geek got his day.” Little did we know. They chose this.

Any other nation or organisation with this magnitude of soft power would be heavily sanctioned. Research seems to be starting to catch up, showing some pretty hard facts of the damage these entities are causing. You have to be clever write regulations that limit the influence of these tech giants without harming smaller players - every degree of freedom or affordance given so we can have nice things seems to be exploited by the giants.

some things never change interventionism, bullying, scamming, warmongering, supporting fascists and genocidal regimes, arranging coups, arranging speculation on first necessity goods, this country's foreign policy is one big hate crime magically, nobody's accountable when south america gets meddled with or the middle-east carpet bombed. since 1945, or maybe even before. #1 indeed. well above russia and china, congratulations
