Today's city lighting is at vulgarity levels, just like other aspects of city-life have been. Huge lights are always on just for keeping places excessively lit. And screens are always on just for the sake of grabbing someone's attention. When I was a kid, moon light was all we needed for all activities at night - village sports, street gatherings or walking across the villages. When there was no moonlight, the nighttime activity was less. We never needed to impress some customer with lighting level, we did not have to do things that require excessive lighting. Any lighting was strictly need-based, not for presentation or for impressing someone. Night skies were pure and pristine. I used to name the stars and star groups while falling asleep on the bed in the open under the sky, with our family dog beside my bed. Those 70's!

One might imagine the replacement of carbon arc lamps by Laser Excited Phosphor (LEP) bulbs as used in some car headlights or some odd enthusiast flashlights. Or perhaps just a bunch of LEDs. https://budgetlightforum.com/t/800lm-ebay-car-laser-lep-modu... What is used for lamps at stadiums? Those are the brightest that I see these days.
