The other maybe equally dark shitty Governmentally fucked over authoritarian state option here is Digital Credentials API, where instead of being able to use any browser, now sites only work if you have an attested browser, that has your government id, and can attest in a privacy preserving way to those facts. This is at least as nightmarish as there being no privacy ever for anyone online to me because it means we all have to use approved authorized browsers.
