Simple Analytics | DevOps Engineer | REMOTE (worldwide, any timezone) | Full-time, 32h, 24h possible | €5,000/month (full-time) | https://www.simpleanalytics.com/jobs/devops Hi HN, I'm Adriaan. Simple Analytics exists thanks to HN: it started with my Show HN in 2018 [1]. Today we're a self-funded, profitable team of four building privacy-first analytics. Privacy is why we run our own bare-metal servers instead of the cloud. We're preparing for a LOT more traffic, and you'll own the infrastructure and its reliability. We have good documentation. First project: leading the infra side of our Elasticsearch to ClickHouse migration, with Alex, our developer. Stack: Ansible, OpenTofu, Docker Compose, Grafana, GitHub Actions, TypeScript. Clear async communication matters more than knowing every tool. You can apply from your terminal: curl https://www.simpleanalytics.com/jobs/devops.md [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18024277

University of Cambridge, University of Manchester | PhD in AI / Earth Observation / Environmental Science | ONSITE | UK home fee status only | £30k tax-free annual stipend Our group at Cambridge works on Earth Observation foundation models (Tessera: v1 https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.20380 , v2 https://arxiv.org/abs/2607.03949 , https://geotessera.org/ ) and we've started a collaboration with Manchester to understand how they can be used to improve pollution models and then environmental decision making in general. This involves training new models and doing high-resolution inference across national or even global scales, as well as figuring out how to use that data to help policymakers make better decisions. As part of this work we have a PhD studentship through the joint Manchester-Cambridge Centre for Doctoral Training for AI in Decision Making for Complex Systems. This involves one year at Manchester doing taught postgraduate study and then three years at Cambridge for the PhD. Our work is all open source and involves solving significant compute and data challenges. Training our current-generation model takes ~250k GPU hours and a single year of global inference needs to move over 5.5 petabytes of data through the inference pipeline. This project would suit someone with strong machine learning and software engineering experience. We can help you build the atmospheric science and Earth Observation skills. We are a highly collaborative group who spend our time not only on foundational research but also on developing applications with practitioners and decision makers. Our work sees use in many industrial, academic and government environments for problems like crop classification, tree species mapping and change detection. You can find out more here: https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/from-satellite-to-stre... - if you have questions about the project you can contact me, Sadiq Jaffer, at sj514@cam.ac.uk . For questions about the application process you'll want aidecisionscdt@manchester.ac.uk . Application deadline is Friday 4th of December with a course start date of September 2027.

Shepherd (Series B) | ONSITE | San Francisco, CA At Shepherd, we're pursuing the most ambitious technical vision in commercial insurance: fully autonomous underwriting. Shepherd is an AI-native commercial insurance platform transforming how high-hazard industries get covered. The infrastructure behind the AI boom (data centers, semiconductor fabs, renewable energy assets) has to be built and insured, but traditional carriers weren't built for this speed. We built Shepherd to solve that. We announced our $42M Series B earlier this year! That brings our total funding to over $60M — led by Intact Private Capital, the investment arm of one of the largest insurers in the world. Intact is not only our lead investor but also a carrier partner, a testament to the confidence the incumbent industry has in what we're building. We’re looking for product-minded, high ownership engineers to join our team! The Engineering team is HQ’d in SF, but we’re growing in NYC now too! We’re hiring for 2 Senior SWEs, 1 MLE and 1 AI PM in SF, and 2 Staff SWEs in NYC. Engineers own projects end-to-end so full stack ability is expected. Check out our open roles here: https://shepherdinsurance.com/careers Our stack includes: Typescript, React, Next.js, GraphQL w/ Apollo, Node.js, Postgres & Redis – If you have experience building AI agents or multi-step reasoning systems, we’d love to hear from you. * In the form, be sure to mention that you heard about this opportunity via Hacker News. Our codebase is friendly to new contributors. You’ll have a fully functional development environment within hours through full automation and will be pushing commits on your first day. Deployments to production happen multiple times per day and finish in under two minutes.Effectively all of our codebase is written in Python, Rust, SQL, JavaScript/TypeScript, and Nix. We run two datacenters with high-performance servers we’ve built ourselves, capable of handling the volumes of data we process. We’ve implemented our own distributed file system, perform full-scale web crawls, and download and run static analysis on the entire universe of published Android APKs and iOS IPAs. Unlike a typical startup where you might spend half your time in meetings and the other half fixing Jira tickets, at MixRank you’ll challenge yourself with difficult technical problems that help you grow as an individual. We’re continuously hiring for the positions below; these aren’t singular roles that close once filled. Our philosophy is that the candidate is more important than the position. For each new member of the team, we design a custom role and responsibilities around their interests. Other companies may create a long list of specific requirements with the expectation that you’ll exactly replace someone on the team or fit a role defined by committee. MixRank is more pragmatic: we first get excited about bringing a unique individual onto the team, then figure out the best way to support their specific talents. Junior Software Engineer - Remote (Global), Full-Time We’re looking for remote junior engineers with 0–3 years of professional software experience and 5+ years of curiosity exploring computers, programming, and technical hobby projects. Ideally, you’ve already graduated. But if you still have one or more years left of school, please feel free to apply anyway. If you’re the right fit for the team, we’ll figure out a way to accommodate your schedule. ORFF Maestra | Prototype Developer; Technical Product Lead | REMOTE (US only) | Contract, part-time | https://orffmaestra.com We're preparing a U.S. Department of Education SBIR Phase IA proposal to build an assessment reasoning platform for school speech-language pathologists. It implements TTL-MSM, a fully specified decision framework for one of the hardest calls in school eligibility evaluations: whether a student's communication profile reflects a disorder or a difference. Clinicians code each source of evidence, and a fixed rule combines them. The rules are written; the software isn't. The research lead is at Baylor University. Prototype Developer ($70–95/hr): build a browser-based web app from a written spec, with privacy designed in from the start so it's ready for FERPA-protected student data later. About 15–20 hrs/week for nine months if funded. Technical Product Lead ($75–100/hr): the bridge between the clinical spec and the engineering. Scope the prototype, turn the spec into requirements, and keep the build on schedule. About 5–8 hrs/week for nine months if funded. Pre-award scoping (10–15 hrs for the developer, 5–10 for the lead) is unpaid, and funded work is contingent on award. U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Apply (structured application, about 30 minutes; replies within five business days): https://orffmaestra.com/developer https://orffmaestra.com/technical-lead

myDataValue | Founding Product Engineer | London (Canary Wharf) | HYBRID, 2 days/week in office | up to £90k + up to 1% equity | https://www.mydatavalue.com/founding-product-engineer/ We build AI agents that run revenue for short-term rental and hotel operators on Booking.com and Airbnb: live prices, promotions and visibility on real portfolios, plus an MCP connector so customers work their accounts from Claude and ChatGPT. Our engineers no longer type most of the code. Claude Code and Codex do. The hard part is knowing what to build, how it should fit together, and whether what the agent wrote is actually right. You will talk to customers, own the architecture, write the briefs, and catch what the agent missed. We do not care which language you know. We care that you can do architecture (single source of truth, clear boundaries, the right layer for a fix) and that you already ship this way. Big bonus if you have worked on hotels, short-term rentals or dynamic pricing. Small team, paying customers, hard problems (private OTA APIs, PMS integrations, pricing decisions that move real money). Three interview stages, no take-home.
